| Specialised Workshop in Paris: French & Law |
If you are a legal practitioner or a student
of law/political science, if you are interested
in politics: learn about French law, French legal
institutions and the major political and social
issues in France, all while following a specialised
French language course.
Course designed for:
• Legal professionals who wish to communicate
in French in the course of their professional
activities.
• Students specialising in this domain. |
Program |
- Mornings from 9.00 to 13.00 (class begins
at 08.15 on the opening Monday): General French
language course, carried out with groups of students
of a similar level.
- Afternoons: Workshops, visits to institutions
and/or meetings with legal professionals. |
Content
of workshops |
- History of law (one session of two and a
half hours)
- The organisation of the judiciary and administration
in France (two sessions of three hours)
1. The principle of separation of judicial and administrative authorities.
2. The French judicial system (presentation of courts and tribunals, competence,
deadline for appeal, demurrage)
3. General presentation of penal procedure
- Political institutions and constitutional law (one session of three hours)
1. The political system of the 5th French Republic
2. The evolution of the constitution
3. Presentation of legislative procedure
- Civil liberties and fundamental rights in France (one session of three hours)
1. Definition of rights and civil liberties
2. The mechanisms of jurisdictional protection
3. Influence of European jurisprudence in this domain (C.E.D.H.)
- Introduction to the French penal code (one session of two and a half hours)
1. Penal law
2. Penal responsibility
3. Penal defence (some procedures of penal procedure)
- Introduction to French business law (one session of two and a half hours)
1. General overview of the French judicial system
2. Contractual law
3. Creation of new businesses
4. Types of contract
5. New technologies
All of these sessions are designed to provide an in depth study of legal vocabulary
and to reproduce the correct usage of terms in their appropriate context. The
use of legal terms is defined, they are written and then reproduced in discussion
with the aid of exercises. Documents (diagrams, summary charts) are provided
to facilitate an understanding of the French judicial system. A study of jurisprudence
is carried out in order to illustrate fundamental concepts.

Meetings with professionals and visits to institutions.
Two of these are set, with the possibility of a third (the last Friday afternoon
being free):
The following institutions may be proposed in the course of the program of
visits:
- The Social and Economic Council
- The Senate
- A higher level court
- The Ministry of the Economy, Finance, and Industry
- An industrial tribunal (labour relations board)
- A commercial tribunal (trade dispute court)
- The Council of State
- The Chamber of Arbitration of Paris
Or other institutions, depending on availability and schedule
Meetings with:
- A lawyer practising in Paris
- A local, regional or national elected official
- The company solicitor of a French business
- A French employer’s organisation
- Other representatives and professionals according to availability |
NOTES |
• Age restriction: Students must be at least
20 years of age
• Minimum of level B1 (Intermediate level of the
Common European Framework of Reference)
• Depending on the availability of the above professionals
and the schedules of institutions, this program
may be subject to change at any moment. Students
will be provided with the final timetable for
this program on the opening day of the course. |
